Student Life

Latinxs are active participants in the Northwestern community.

There are many ways for you to get involved on campus and in the community. In addition to the full list of Latinx student groups below, see the Wildcat Connection student group directory for a full list of Northwestern's nearly 500 clubs and organizations.

Advocacy

Alianza – The Latinx Student Alliance

Alianza is the largest Latinx student group on campus. The purpose of Alianza is the encouragement of cultural, social, intellectual, and political unity and advancement of Northwestern University’s Latinx population and broader Latinx communities. Established in 1989, Alianza is the historic representative and political voice of Northwestern University’s Latinx undergraduate student body. Alianza also hosts many events for Northwestern’s Latinx student population and collaborates with other organizations.

Brazilian Student Association (BRASA)

The Brazilian Student Association (BRASA) aims to establish prolific and long-lasting relationships between American universities and Brazil, thereby creating a platform through which Brazilian students in the United States—and non-Brazilian students willing to be involved—can act to improve Brazil. In addition, BRASA aims to promote the understanding of Brazilian culture, professional opportunities, and the Portuguese language. BRASA is also present throughout Wildcat Welcome (Northwestern’s orientation week) to support Brazilian students whose guardians may be unable to attend programming.

Religious

Destino

Destino is an ethnic ministry at Northwestern designed to be a safe space for Latinx-identifying students to continue or initiate a relationship with Christianity. We explore Latinx Northwestern students' ethnic identity in the context of religion and build future Latinx leaders. We are a welcoming and loving community who seeks to guide Latinx students in their spiritual walk, while also helping students to create friendships and resources that enhance their experience and life at Northwestern University.

Performance

Mariachi Northwestern

Mariachi Northwestern is a student group that strives to expose our surrounding communities to Mariachi music and culture! We have performed at events ranging from campus activities to hired gigs all over the Chicagoland area. Any singer, violinist, guitarist, bass, accordionist, or trumpet player is welcome to join us, no Mariachi background or Spanish language prerequisite necessary.

Ballet Folklórico Mexicano: Ritmo de Mis Ancestros

Ballet Folklórico Mexicano: Ritmo de Mis Ancestros was established in 2012 by 6 freshmen Chicanas to create a space at Northwestern that made them feel comfortable enough to share and embrace their artistic side, their culture, and their roots. We strive to critically preserve our Mexican culture by showcasing folklórico at Northwestern and the surrounding communities and to increase awareness of Mexican ancestry and to serve as a catalyst for others to take pride in their own backgrounds.

Dale Duro Latin Dance Company (DDLDC)

Dale Duro Latin Dance Co. (DDLDC), Northwestern’s Latin dance team, is an inclusive dance group started in 2018 composed of Latin culture appreciators of all backgrounds and skill levels. We teach free workshops of varied Latin dance styles throughout each quarter, host community bonding events like karaoke nights and movie nights, and perform in our BIG annual spring show where we showcase our talents in salsa, bachata, merengue, flamenco, cumbia, reggaeton and more. We hope to continue fostering a supportive environment where we can all grow as Latin dancers, all while enriching and strengthening our perspective on Latin culture.

Pre-Professional

National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ)

NAHJ is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. The organization provides its members with networking opportunities with media professionals, regional and national journalism conferences, access to career opportunities, and access to scholarships. They strive to serve as a versatile resource for the Hispanic/Latino community.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)

SHPE at Northwestern University promotes the advancement of all ethnicities, majors, and backgrounds in education, employment, and society. SHPE at Northwestern University serves the Northwestern Community and surrounding schools through academic workshops, community service, and student group collaboration.
